No checkpoint calamities: Save at any time on Xbox One

The Xbox One will allow players to save, pause and resume games at any point.

"One of things that we haven't talked about is the way the saved game architecture works," Ben Kilgore, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, told Polygon.

"It's more like a phone a little bit. So you are not going to lose your save game stuff as you are switching between tasks."

Developers will still have the option to insert predetermined save points, but all games will have the ability to save your last moment.

If you walk away from your Xbox One, let it automatically power down and return the next day, it will resume where you left off regardless of checkpoints.

With the new Kinect, all of this is achieved by shouting "XBOX PAUSE" at your console.

But what if you turn the console off completely? Even when it is in it's lowest power state(besides not plugged in) the Kinect is always running and "always listening to you" which would still use a significant amount of electricity.

Hopefully game developers still implement saves for those people like me that turn off their consoles at the power.

I think it'll be fine. Sounds like it just autosaves whenever you pause/stop playing.

Only thing that will make me buy any console is game exclusives. And to play the games you brought to play online for free, now if you want the added stuff that comes with a subscription, then you have to pay for that. I will admit that I like this feature, though.

What about games where save points become part of the game strategy

Think of it less as a game save, and more of a gamestate pause. I imagine it being like how you can pick up exactly where you were in a mobile game, but it acts independently of any actual game-save structure.
e.g. No rollback of any kind, no multiple save trees.

Glad to see they can support this (and not surprising, given modern trends and the XB1's architecture). Will be interesting to see whether it's a hard save like the PSP, or a suspended state like the PS4/Vita/most smart phones/tablets. My money is suspended state, as that's easily the easiest way to do it, but they could do a hard save of everything that's in the RAM I guess (it'd just be fairly big!)
